SUSTAINABLE CAMPGROUNDS
IN SEARCH OF THE MOST SUSTAINABLE CAMPGROUND
Campgrounds are our home away from home. They give us an immersion in the natural environment and our use of that space impacts on the ecosystems that support that environment. If we look after the ecosystem and plan for minimal impact on the environment we are contributing to sustainability.
Environmentally healthy ecosystems provide vital goods and services that contribute to the economic importance of nature. Nature also helps to meet the social and cultural needs of humanity. Using natural assets sustainably, allows humanity to do so “without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland Commission, United Nations, March 20, 1987)
A sustainable campground will provide amenities or resources that assist us in contributing to the environmental health of the ecosystem. As economads promoting sustainability across Australia we begin our search for the most sustainable campground. We believe sustainability is a work in progress that includes environmental, economic, social and cultural domains.
The sustainability of a campground may be measured as a record of activities that contribute to these domains in provisioning resources, regulating elements, supportive behaviours and sociocultural exchange.
If you would like to recommend a campground that contributes to sustainability we'd love to hear from you. You could use the SUSTAINABLE CRITERIA to do your own campground assessment or simply let us know your RECOMMENDATION and we will follow it up.
