WHAT IS AN ECONOMAD?
An economad, as the name implies, is simply an ecologically-aware nomad, interacting with the world as you travel and living in a way that sustains the environment, people and our economy.
Sustainability includes environmental performance, economic activity, and social progress. It is reflected in both values and practice by individuals, organisations, communities, and competent authorities who elect to become stewards to advance a more sustainable world. Economads are stewards of the land in which we travel. We responsibly shepherd and safeguard that which allows us to keep on travelling in an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable way. |
"If we can revise our attitudes
towards the land under our feet; if we can accept a role of steward, and depart from the role of conqueror, if we can accept the view that man and nature are inseparable parts of the unified whole..." Olegas Truchanas, 1971, first part of quotation displayed upon entry to the Information Centre, Strahan, Tasmania ...then we may understand what part we play in shaping the world we live in |
How you travel is up to you but the choices you make about what you use to move yourself around, the amount of 'stuff' you carry, what you do for a 'crust' and for what reasons is the 'eco' part. When you choose to value sustainable actions, you can begin the journey of
becoming an economad, in your own way, in your own time and within your own capabilities.
